Gum disease is an infection of the soft gum tissue that both surrounds and supports your teeth. This is a common dental disorder that more than half of adults suffer some level of. When this soft tissue gets infected, it can have devastating effects to both your oral health and also your physical health, if not treated.
What is gum disease?
Most of our body is covered and protected with our outer dermal layer. This protects the body from bacteria gaining access. A few areas, including our mouths, is an opening inside our body, and it is constantly being exposed to bacteria. Biology has granted us some protections to reduce the likelihood of infection, which is why we have the defense of saliva. Saliva does a great job of keeping our mouth clear of food debris, but it is not perfect, and with modern diet changes, we intake considerably more sugar than our past relatives putting our mouths at greater risk.
There are some physical characteristics that you can visibly see indicating that you have some level of gum disease. You may see the following signs:
- Irritated Gums: Looking at your gums in a mirror, are they red? Are they puffy? Do they hurt, even just a little?
- Bleeding Gums: A dangerous reaction from our patients is the assumption that a little bleeding when flossing is normal. It is not normal, it is an indication of gum disease.
- Teeth Appear Longer: Your gums will try to heal themselves by pulling away from the source of the infection. Unfortunately, they are also pulling away from your teeth, taking support for your teeth with them.
- Foul Odor: A common complaint among patients with gum disease is bad breath. This is due to bacteria below the gum line. It is not only causing an infection but contains decaying bacteria causing this foul smell.
How can I get rid of gum disease?
The best course of action to removing gum disease is a visit with your dentist at Tran Family Dentistry & Associates. Working with our hygienist, we can remove the source of infection and help bring the health of your gums back. There are a few courses of actions that we can take depending on the severity. For some patients, a simple dental cleaning is all that is needed, for most of our adult patients we will recommend a deep cleaning using the technique of scaling and root planing, which is the removal of bacteria and the smoothing of the tooth roots. We may find it’s necessary to prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash. Your dentist will review these options with you based on your needs.
