However, excellent oral health is not just the product of daily brushing and flossing. Professional cleanings and regular dental exams are also a crucial component of a healthy smile. Tran Family Dentistry & Associates is a professional dental team that offers comprehensive care, state-of-the-art procedures, and a comfortable environment. We perform regular cleanings and exams to help our patients improve and maintain their oral health.
A professional cleaning can help remove calculus (tarter) and dental plaque from the surfaces of your teeth. Both adults and children should receive regular cleaning to prevent tooth decay, reverse minor cavities, and maintain exceptional periodontal health. A deep cleaning may be required if your dentist finds deep periodontal pockets between your gums and teeth. Deep periodontal pockets are a primary symptom of gum disease.
During a deep cleaning, our dental hygienist will perform a procedure known as scaling and root planing. Scaling is the process of removing the plaque and tartar from the teeth above the gumline. In most cases, we use a device called an ultrasonic scaler that removes tartar without damaging your enamel. Microscopic bubbles implode on the surface of the tooth, prompting a breakdown of tartar, and eliminating bacterial microbes. Root planing removes plaque and tartar from the root of the tooth. Rough spots are smoothed out, which removes bacteria and prevents gum disease.
Children often receive fluoride treatment during their professional cleaning. Fluoride can strengthen dental enamel and reverse decay. Fluoride can be applied in a gel, foam, or varnish form.
A dental exam is a comprehensive examination of your oral health. Dental exams often include:
- Risk assessment for tooth decay, root decay, and gum or bone disease.
- Assess the need for fluoride treatments.
- Check for bite and jaw complications.
- Stain removal.
- Dental x-rays, 3D scans, and other diagnostic procedures.
- Assess your need for tooth restoration.
- Educate you on proper cleaning techniques.
We also review your complete dental history. We discuss diet, medications, and diseases that can increase your risk of developing decay or gum disease. Dental x-rays and 3D scans provide useful images and a more comprehensive understanding of your mouth. We use x-rays to establish treatment plans for restorations such as fillings, dental crowns, bridges, and dental implants.
Our dentists may also perform an oral cancer screening during your exam. This includes a check of the sides of your neck, the insides of your cheeks, and under your jaw. An oral cancer screening can expose warning signs before they develop into a more life-threatening condition.
During your exam, we may also take a dental impression. Impressions can be used to evaluate your bite, fabricate a restoration, and make mouth guards or bleaching trays.
Maintaining Proper Oral Health
Professional cleanings and dental exams are largely preventative measures. Regular visits help you avoid the complications of an unhealthy mouth. Gingivitis can be caught before it turns into periodontitis. Decay can be removed before it causes significant damage. Teeth can be corrected before they cause bite problems. The importance of maintaining proper oral health is greater than most people realize. We recommend scheduling an appointment every six months.
