Children's Dentistry
Federal Way, WA

Children smiling about the fun visit to their dentist office in Federal Way, WA.Children's dentistry is an important part of your child’s oral and overall health. At Tran Family Dentistry & Associates, we pride ourselves on providing excellent care for every member of the family. Beginning with your child’s first visit, our job is to provide a positive experience and help them maintain a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.

Your Child's First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your child’s first visit take place within the first six months, or when the first tooth erupts. During the first visit, your dentist will perform a comprehensive exam. We check for any initial signs of potential problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease. We also show you how to properly care for your child’s teeth, discuss diet, and highlight poor habits. Make sure to ask questions and voice concerns to improve your knowledge.

We know a dental office can be a scary place for children. A positive first experience can eliminate subsequent fear and anxiety. Tran Family Dentistry & Associates offers a warm and welcoming environment to make each visit as comfortable as possible. We recommend scheduling an appointment when the child is rested, fed, and cooperative. Make sure to stay positive. Avoid using words like "pain" and "drill." Avoid bribing your child to visit the office, and never use a visit as a threat of punishment. Our team will do whatever it takes to provide an excellent experience.

Importance of Children’s Dentistry

Setting up a strong foundation can lead to a lifetime of healthy teeth. Baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, are just as important as permanent teeth. Decay and infections in primary teeth can easily spread to permanent teeth. Primary teeth also foster proper chewing and speech development. Complications such as crowding, bite misalignment, and impacted teeth may lead to development issues. If a primary tooth is lost prematurely, adjacent teeth may shift, leaving inadequate space for a permanent tooth to erupt.

Preventive dentistry is an important part of children’s dentistry. Professional cleanings and fluoride treatments can strengthen dental enamel and prevent cavities. As your child develops, we can also place dental sealants to protect the bite plane from harmful bacteria.

Regular exams can help us diagnose and manage any conditions, diseases, and abnormalities. We also provide restorative treatments such as fillings, crowns, and replacement teeth to prevent further complications. In some cases, surgical intervention may be required to prevent tooth extractions.

A tooth that has been knocked out or fractured may constitute a dental emergency. Time is a determining factor in tooth recovery. Contact us or seek out medical attention immediately.

Proper Oral Hygiene for Children

Use a clean, damp piece of gauze or washcloth to properly clean your infant’s gums. Never put them to bed with a bottle that contains anything other than water. This can lead to a condition known as baby bottle tooth decay.

As your child grows older, make sure they brush and floss at least twice a day. Purchase an ADA recommended brush and toothpaste. Limit their exposure to foods and beverages high in sugars and simple carbohydrates to avoid tooth decay.
